FAI - CONTI VECCHI SALINES

The Macchiareddu salt pans, founded in 1929, owe their birth to the far-sighted idea of Luigi Conti Vecchi. The challenge: reclaim the Santa Gilla Pond and set up a salt pan.

The project included the construction of the village of Macchiareddu, intended for salt pan workers and their families.
Thus was born a community in which owners, managers, employees and workers lived together. In the village there was everything the inhabitants could need: a food shop, a telephone booth, an infirmary, a church and more.

The workers were treated with every respect (they had free meals in the canteen, they spent little on electricity, they did not pay for wood, they had a vegetable garden and a bathroom in the apartment).

After work was also taken care of, with the organization of sporting activities, trips and other moments of socialisation.
The Saline Conti Vecchi are the second largest in Italy, after those of Margherita di Savoia, in Puglia.

The annual amount of salt harvested depends on the climate. Under ideal conditions, production can reach 400,000 tons. Much of the salt is intended for food use. A slice that should not be overlooked goes to the chemical industry and companies that produce detergents and cosmetics.

Finally, another use concerns the thawing of roads.
