Yacht Club Quartu
Located on the coast of Quartu, precisely on the beach of San Andrea, the Quartu Yacht Club is the oldest amateur sports association affiliated with the Italian sailing federation within the territory of the Municipality of Quartu Sant’Elena.
At its structure, located in Via Sorrento, privately owned but included in the municipal sports facilities register, it is possible to practice sailing activities with drifts leaving the sandy coast or surfing, canoeing and sup. In fact, the club is equipped with both single (laser) and multiple (trident 16) dinghies and surfboards suitable for teaching and canoes to be left for use only by registered members.
The offer is completed by a j24 owned by a partner, moored at the port of Capitana with which mini-offshore courses are held.
The main activity of the Club has always been to promote water sports and in particular the sport of sailing in the various disciplines (Drift, Altura, Surf). Precisely for this reason the Yacht Club Quartu has been a sailing school that has directed its main activity to the training of young people in the sport of sailing.
Lastly, the role of organizing body of the Marina di Capitana winter championship, now in its fifteenth registration, cannot be forgotten.
Originally the Quartu Yacht Club did not have this name nor was it located in via Sorrento.
Born from the almost pioneering initiative of a small group of members, the club found its first headquarters at the newborn Porto di Capitana in via Serchio in 1995.
This initiative was aimed at establishing a first sports association within the port in order to be able to organize sailing events and courses for beginners. The original name was "Capitana Yacht Club".
Subsequently, the activity of the association specialized in the sector of dinghies, small sailing boats that do not need a port for mooring and hauling but are normally put on land and surfing.
Precisely to better exploit this type of boats, the club moved its headquarters to the current Via Sorrento 44 bis in 2003. This position allowed access to the sandy coast in "Su Stangioni" and to be not too far from the port of Capitana which refer to dinghy hauling and boat mooring.
The activity of the club as a simple amateur, growing more and more especially in the training courses required the organization of a real sailing school and qualified personnel. Also in order to participate together with the Italian Sailing School, located in the port of the organization of the winter in Marina di Capitana, a request was made for affiliation to the Italian Sailing Federation.
In 2005 the club, through a statutory modification, was officially affiliated to the Italian Sailing Federation with the number 622. In 2007 the name was changed to "Yacht Club Quartu".
Thanks to the affiliation it was possible to increase the sailing courses both in number and in quality through the use of federally qualified sailing instructors, to be able to organize the winter championship of Capitana as a club by obtaining the appointment of federal regatta judges and to organize stages of Sardinian zonal championships for some drift classes (470, Open Bic, Double) which have allowed other Sardinian clubs to know and navigate the sea in front of Quartu.
Currently the sailing school activity on dinghies for children aged 6 to 18 represents the main activity of the club accompanied by drift and surfing courses for adults. This activity is the primary and founding goal of the club as an affiliate of the Italian sailing federation.
In 2018 the sports team was born, made up of underage athletes aged between 13 and 17 who train and participate in the events and competitions provided by the Italian Sailing Federation.
Specifically, the competitive phase is carried out on single O’pen Skiff boats (9 - 15 years) and double 29er boats (14 - 19 years).
In addition to competitive activity, the club organizes sailing courses offered in the form of a summer camp, where children and teenagers approach sport in a fun and playful way. Thanks to the success of the summer sailing school and the possibility of being able to train outdoors, the pre-competitive winter sailing school for preparation for access to the school is also particularly popular with the constant presence of 12 boys of 8 - 12 years old.
